Meliá Hotels International has once again been acknowledged as one of the companies most committed to sustainability in the travel industry. The hotel company has been selected by the prestigious Financial Times among the leading European companies in the fight against climate change in its annual Europe's Climate Leaders report.
In a list dominated by financial services and industrial companies, Meliá Hotels International is among only 6 companies in the travel and leisure industry included in the ranking. It is also the only Spanish travel company and one of 23 Spanish companies included in the list of 300 companies.
Thanks to its commitments to sustainability and the integration of sustainability into company strategy, Meliá Hotels International has become an international benchmark in the travel industry over recent years. Meliá is currently recognised as the second Most Sustainable Hotel Company in the World, and the leader in both Spain and Europe. This recognition was made by S&P Global, along with the award of a Silver Class distinction to Meliá for its positioning.
This new recognition from the Financial Times joins others previously received by Meliá, such as being named the Seventh Best Company in the World in Sustainable Management by the Wall Street Journal in recognition of the work carried out by the company in recent years to integrate sustainable criteria in its business model, to certify its environmental management model, to implement new technology to measure waste and to manage and control the use of resources, among other initiatives.
Combatting climate change is one of the top priorities in the Meliá Hotels International sustainability strategy. The company has a long history in reducing CO2 emissions, currently with 60% of its hotels worldwide using renewable energy, a figure which rises to 100% in Spain, and having dedicated more than 11 million euros in investments to combat climate change.
Through projects such as CO2PERATE, which applies artificial intelligence to optimise the efficient management and control of natural resources, Meliá is committed to reducing emissions based on Science Based Target Initiatives (SBTi), a global alliance that supports actions against climate change in the business world. The Company has already reduced its scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 50% compared to the base year.
According to Gabriel Escarrer, Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, “It's an honour for us to receive this recognition from one of the most important publications in the world. We are proud to be one of the leading European companies in combatting climate change, as this highlights the efforts that we continue to make to be an increasingly more responsible company, even in such difficult times for the industry".
