Corporate News

The award was given to the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the company recognised as the Most Sustainable Hotel Company in the World, highlighting his commitment to sustainability

At the first edition of Spain's Sustainable Media Awards, organised by Turespaña through its Tourism Office in London, Gabriel Escarrer Jaume was awarded for his leadership in sustainability matters.

During the award presentation, Gabriel Escarrer's career was highlighted along with the example he has set as a business leader focused on transformation guided by sustainability values, which led Meliá to reassert its position as the Most Sustainable Hotel Company in the World (S&P Global ESG 2023) numerous times.

The special Personality of the Year award was given by Wanderlust, a British magazine dedicated to travel information, and was presented by its CEO George Kipouros. Gabriel Escarrer Jaume thanked Wanderlust for the award and declared that “it is always such an honour to receive awards related to sustainability, a clear priority for the tourism industry, and particularly in the UK, a destination that we feel such a strong connection with."

For the director of the Spanish Tourist Office in London, Manuel Butler, sustainable tourism “is at the heart of our strategy at the Spanish Tourist Office in London and we are delighted to see the variety and quality of the pieces submitted to the media for our inaugural awards." The other members of jury panel for Spain's Sustainability Awards, alongside Butler, were such notable figures as Carol Rose, Senior Sustainability Manager at ABTA, Thomas Power, CEO of Pura Aventura, and Richard Hammond, the founder of Green Traveller.

Meliá Hotels International is also aligned with Turespaña's goal to promote sustainability-focused tourism experiences through initiatives like Spain's Sustainability Day, prioritising key actions such as improvements to products and destinations, which includes seasonal diversification. The hotel company is firmly committed to these goals in various destinations throughout Spain, where the British market is the most prevalent.
