Meliá Hotels in Cuba back to normal

  • The reopening of Havana and Varadero airports allows Meliá Cuba hotels in the destinations to resume operations

Hurricane Irma has affected several destinations in Cuba in which Meliá Hotels International operates hotels. Thanks to the coordination by the Cuban authorities of preventative measures before the hurricane hit, fortunately there were no personal injuries to any guests or team members. Preventative evacuations were also carried out, and many guests returned to their home countries before the hurricane reached the island. Those who remained in Cuba were transferred to places at less risk such as Havana and Varadero.

The reopening of Havana and Varadero airports now allows hotel operations by Meliá Hotels International Cuba to get back to normal. The hotels in Havana, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Cayo Largo are already fully operational.

In Varadero, the majority of company hotels suffered minor damages and are currently reopening services, expecting everything to be back to normal in the next 24 hours. Meliá Peninsula Varadero was evacuated as a precautionary measure, and the company and hotel owner have decided to not accept any more guests for a short period while services are restored. The Paradisus Varadero will also be closed temporarily to carry out reforms and improvements prior to the high season.

In the northern cays, Cayo Coco has recovered its connection to the mainland today with the reopening of the causeway, and work is also under way to restore access to Cayo Santa Maria. With regard to the repair of hotels that have been less affected, the company will start with hotels in Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Santa María in preparation for the high season. We will provide more news on the situation in the northern cays as it becomes available.

Meliá Hotels International Cuba will be extremely flexible with customers that have reservations for the period in which hotels in Varadero and the northern cays will still be closed, allowing them to cancel their reservation or be relocated to other hotels, depending on room availability.

We would like to emphasize the professionalism and commitment of all of our team members and the coordination of the local authorities to guarantee information, safety, and the maximum possible comfort for our guests and team members throughout this situation.
