Business travel surges in Mallorca with the Palma Convention Centre presenting very positive results

  • With 226 events and more than 76,000 attendees in 2018, the Convention Centre ends its first full year of activity with results above initial objectives
  • Historic winter season for tourism in Palma with the Convention Centre playing a key role in hosting major corporate events and medical congresses
  • Events in 2018 have allowed the redistribution to society of more than 15 million euros

Palma Convention Centre managed by Meliá Hotels International presented its Activity Report for 2018 today, its first full year of operation after opening in April 2017. Over the year , the Convention Centre and Meliá Palma Bay Hotel hosted 226 events with 76,678 attendees, generating revenues of 15.3 million euros. "These results are above our initial objectives and expectations and are very positive results which should lead to the consolidation of the Convention Centre in the domestic and European MICE market," said Ramón Vidal, Managing Director of the facilities.

Vidal highlighted the relevance of Spanish and international events as the base of the business and the significant economic impact they have had on the destination by boosting demand for travel services and associated facilities. Proof of this are the more than 50,000 overnight stays made by business travellers in city hotels during their visits to the Convention Centre in 2018.

The most relevant examples were corporate events hosted by Jaguar and Panasonic and attended by 7,000 people as well as a number of important Spanish medical congresses. All of these events are even more significant as they were held in the low or shoulder season, allowing the Convention Centre to act as a key driver behind the achievement of one of the major strategic objectives of the destination: the reduction of travel seasonality and greater diversification.

At the same time, the 80 events held by local organisations also demonstrated the significant interest of the Mallorcan business and cultural community in the facilities and provided support for its aspiration to become a catalyst for innovation, culture and social cohesion.

With regard to management of the facilities by Meliá Hotels International, of particular note was the selection of the Palma Convention Centre as a best practice in Corporate Social Responsibility in Spain at the CaixaBank Hotels & Tourism Awards, a further demonstration of how Meliá has made corporate responsibility an integral part of its management of the facilities. In 2018, the Company has continued to enhance employability, responsible supply chain management, new eco-efficient technology, reduced environmental impact (including measures such as the elimination of single-use plastics), greater sustainable mobility and solidarity projects.

This management model aims to generate sustainable wealth throughout its local environment and to evaluate this Meliá Hotels International measures the impact on society generated by the Convention Centre. Of the 15.3 million euros in revenue generated in 2018, 27% went to staff, 36% to suppliers and 28% to public authorities. Another 5% has been allocated to investment in infrastructure and the remaining 4% goes to the management company and its shareholders.

Joana María Adrover, Chair of the Convention Centre Board of Directors and councillor at Palma City Hall, also presented the results of “Palacio de Congresos”, the company that owns the facilities under the public responsibility of Palma City Hall and the Balearic Islands Government.
