Contract for the Palma Congress Centre signed in London

  • The Vice President and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, the Mayor of Palma, José Hila, and the Vice President of the Balearic Islands Government presented the project to the travel industry and international media

The World Travel Market in London was the venue chosen by the Palma City Council to sign the lease for the new Congress Centre and adjoining hotel with Meliá Hotels International.

The signature took place only two weeks after the Congress Centre was awarded to Meliá, a clear sign of the will of all involved to accelerate implementation and the opening of the facilities. Meliá Hotels International now has 120 days to open the Congress Centre and hotel to the general public.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Balearic Islands Government which, as the Vice President and Minister for Tourism Gabriel Barceló stated, "has strongly supported this key infrastructure project for the Balearic Islands." Barceló also explained that fulfilling the commitment to the local population to complete and open the Congress Centre has been one of the most important achievements of the local government.

The Meliá Hotels International Vice President and CEO, Gabriel Escarrer, said that within five years the Company is committed to hosting more than 320 events a year and attracting more than 75,000 visitors. He also highlighted the importance of congresses, events and conventions in making Palma a leading “bleisure” destination, at a time when the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events) segment in Spain is expected to grow at around 8 % next year.

Escarrer, for whom the Congress Centre was "a very desirable objective", explained that, in addition to experience and an international brand such as Meliá Hotels & Resorts, the Company also brings its prestige and know-how in the MICE segment and leadership in the so-called “bleisure” segment combining business and leisure experiences. He added that the Congress Centre will allow business travellers to extend their stay and discover Palma and all of its cultural, artistic and social attractions.

The Mayor of Palma, José Hila, thanked Meliá Hotels International for its commitment to the Congress Centre and the city. "We are happy that it is a company with knowledge of the industry and the city that will be managing the facilities." Hila said that "in the current dynamic situation and with the good prospects for the future, Palma is committed to diversification, and reducing seasonality is the best way to generate greater wealth and new jobs."
